Marty ZupanMarty Zupan is President and CEO of the Institute for Humane Studies.  She joined IHS in 1989 to build new programs for young talent interested in non-academic careers in ideas.  In the mid-1990s she led an expansion of the Institute’s educational programs, and in 2001 she was appointed president.

Prior to her career with the Institute, Marty was editor-in-chief of the monthly opinion magazine Reason.  She has been published in several academic journals as well as the New York Times Sunday Book Review and the op-ed pages of newspapers.  She has served on the boards of several nonprofits,including a private grade school in the Washington, DC, suburbs. 

 

Dan Butler is the Director of Development, joining IHS after spending 4 years trading ETF’s on the floor of the American Stock Exchange for Bailer Trading, LLC. Dan is a native of Indiana and attended the University of Pennsylvania. A student/athlete at Penn competing in wrestling, he maintains involvement in the future of Penn wrestling as a member the Pennsylvania Grappler’s Club. Dan is also an avid hiker and occasional mountaineer.

 

  

 

Orges Beqiri is a Development Officer at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He received his B.S. in Management Science & Engineering from Stanford University in 2005. Prior to joining Mercatus, Orges worked in the financial industry specializing in agricultural commodities.

 

 

 

 

 Julie Burden is the Director of Event Strategy at the Institute for Humane Studies. Julie has over nine years of experience in fundraising and event management. Prior to joining the Institute for Humane Studies' team, she was the Director of Development at the Tax Foundation. She has also served as fundraising and event management consultant at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Development Manager at the Washington Chamber Symphony,and Events Manager at Biola University. She studied at Biola University in California and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English Literature.

 

 

 


Beth Crane is a Development Officer at the Institute for Humane Studies. She has over 7 years of Exeperience in fundraising and event management.  Prior to joining the Institute for Humane Studies, she owned and operated a fundraising and event management firm specializing in political and non-profit campaigns. Ms. Crane studied at Norther Michigan University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.

 

 

 

 Courtney Derr As Deputy Director of Events, Courtney Derr is responsible for planning and executing all aspects of IHS’s 50th Anniversary Dinner. Courtney joined the free market movement as Deputy Director of Development at the Tax Foundation, where she managed the direct mail program, corporate relations, and the annual dinner. Courtney recently served as Senior Development Director at Transparency International-USA, the US chapter of an international anti-corruption non-profit, where she designed and implemented an annual fundraising strategy, including the launch of their first fundraising gala.

 

  

Eric Imhoff is the Campaign Coordinator at the Institute for Humane Studies. Eric is a graduate of Northwood University and has a BBA in Economics and Management. Prior to joining IHS, he worked for Washington Policy Center as the Development Coordinator and Mackinac Center for Public Policy in a variety of intern positions. Also during his time at Northwood he conducted research as a Koch Scholar. In his free time he enjoys reading, playing sports and hanging out with his fiancée and their two dogs in Arlington, VA

 

 

 
Jim Johnston is the director of marketing for the Institute for Humane Studies. He is responsible for communicating with the Institute's current supporters and seeking new supporters. Before coming to IHS in August of 1998, Jim spent three and a half years working in The Heritage Foundation's development office. Johnston earned his BA from Tulane University and resides in Alexandria with his wife and children.

 

 

 

Leigh McAfee is a Senior Development Associate for the Institute for Humane Studies. A native Texan, she graduated from Grove City College (PA) with a BS in International Business and is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in International Commerce and Policy at George Mason University. Leigh also enjoys running, live music, and serving as a non-official tour guide to the Washington, D.C. area for visiting friends and relatives. 

 

 

 

 

Isaac Morehouse is a Gifts Officer at the Institute for Humane Studies. Morehouse previously directed educational programs and policy programs and mentored students at IHS. In addition to his work in fund raising, Isaac is a frequent lecturer to student groups on economic ideas, communication skills, the philosophy of freedom and more. He holds a master's degree in economics with a focus on the Austrian School from the University of Detroit Mercy, and he received his bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy from Western Michigan University.  

 

 

 

Sarah Muse is a Development Associate. She hails from Van Wert, OH and is a graduate of Ashland University where she double majored in Economics and International Political Studies. Sarah interned at IHS one summer and it changed her entire economic and political outlook. She is glad to be back at IHS full time helping spread the ideas of Liberty.

 

 

 

 

Casey Newberry is a native of Salem, MA. She received a B.A. in Communication from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas where she also played basketball for the Running Rebels. Her other interests besides basketball and event planning, include kickboxing, snowboarding/skiing, writing and cooking.

 

 

 

 

Roger Pattison is a Development Associate for the Mercatus Center and the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. Before securing  this position he was a summer intern for the Communicators Department of IHS helping with events and research. Prior to joining IHS he spent two years managing a GPS tracking system for ski resorts in Lake Tahoe, California and Steamboat Springs, Colorado during which he was able to spend time travelling to various destinations. A native of Nevada, Roger attended Hillsdale College in Hillsdale Michigan and received a BA in Economics and Spanish.

 

 

Ashley Schiller is an events associate for the Institute for Humane Studies. She previously worked as a media relations associate IHS’ sister organization, the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
